Questions and Answers for Amazon Life Insurance Claims.
Is Basic Term life insurance different than Supplemental life insurance?
Yes, here’s how they’re different.
Basic Term: Each eligible employee receives 2 times his/her salary as a death benefit. $500,000 is the maximum death benefit. There’s no cash value. Amazon pays one-hundred percent of the premiums. There’s no qualification, it’s automatically guaranteed coverage regardless of health history.
Supplemental Life: Each eligible employee can choose between 1 and 10 times their salary as a death benefit. The maximum death benefit is $2 million. All policies are term insurance and have no cash value. Each employee completes an application before being approved for coverage. This coverage is subject to investigation and can be denied, under contestability provisions, in the event of a death.
Why would your Amazon Life Insurance claim get denied?
Some of the more common reasons a life insurance claim can be denied are Suicide, Overdose, DUI, or drunk driving? But it’s not the cause of death that may lead to a claim denial, it’s the application the employee completed when they signed up for the coverage that leads to many denials.
The insurance company will go back, prior to the application and get medical records, legal records, income information, and anything else it believes is relevant to the claim. They’ll scrutinize this information for any omission on the application. So, even if the insured died of cancer, if they didn’t disclose treatments for alcohol abuse on the application, the claim can be denied. The cause of death is not always the reason a claim gets denied.
If you have an Amazon Supplemental Life claim, call us now, before you file the claim, to be sure your claim isn’t denied.
If the death was an accident am I entitled to a double benefit?
Amazon offers both; automatic and Supplemental Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage. There are several ways in which someone is eligible for benefits from this coverage. One way is when the insured’s death is caused by an accident. The second way is from the loss of limb, sight, speech, hearing or paralysis due to an accident. In other words, you don’t have to die to receive claim money.
Coverage is automatic under the Basic Term life policy. And, additional coverage can be added under the Supplemental Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy. AD&D coverage under the Basic Term life plan provides the same amount of benefit as the employee’s Basic Term policy. Employees must enroll in the Supplemental AD&D coverage and the benefits vary from 1 to 10 times the employee’s salary. The maximum benefit is $2 million.
Before a benefit is paid the insurer will cross-check the cause of the death against a list of exclusions. Exclusions are factors that are related to the death but are not covered even if the cause of the death is an accident.
If you have Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage with Amazon we strongly recommend you consult with us prior to filing any claim as these claims can be very difficult to collect.
