FAQ:
Q: Will it help if I call the insurance company and make a complaint?
Yes. The reason we say this is because there are standard processes that life insurance companies follow when they receive complaints. A big part of the complaint process includes the need for documentation and proof. It’s not enough to give a written account of how you were harmed and how angry you are, you need fact-based evidence of how you were harmed.
Life insurers are looking for specific things that can prove you have a legitimate complaint, but they’re not likely to tell you what they’re looking for. Unless you have experience with the life insurance complaint process your complaint isn’t likely to get your claim paid or your premium refunded.
Q: Can the Department of Insurance help me?
It’s best to think of a state’s Department of Insurance as an organization that has limited oversight and even more limited enforcement powers. A department of insurance oversees things like; the filing of new policies an insurer wants to sell in a State, proper form filings, an insurer’s financial requirements, licensing of agents, and other activities that have a lot to do with collecting fees.
What a Department of Insurance doesn’t do is make life insurance claim decisions. A Department of Insurance also can’t force a life insurer to refund your premiums. They might fine an agent for bad practices, and they might terminate an agent’s license, but that doesn’t get you a refund. That doesn’t put money back in your pocket.
Q: How long will it take to resolve my complaint?

I have had a life insurance Policy from Metlife since 2015 and it is now Brighthouse. For the past 3 months they have screwed up my monthly payments by not taking the mere $155 direct from my bank account as they have always done and leaving my policy unpaid for. Every month on the 13th I start to call and call almost every day. They make excuses and claim my bank has been rejecting it or I reached my debit card limit or any other fake excuse. I have not been able to rectify this situation no matter how many times I call the call center. They have no one other then robotic, script speaking customer service who cannot do anything but waste time repeated themselves. My payment is now 22 days late and I cannot get anyone take my payment. Grrrrrrrr

HAVE A ANNUITY CONTRACT WITH BRIGHTHOUSE. ANNUITANTS WERE MY WIFE AND I. WHEN SHE DIED IN AUGUST MY MONTHLY PAYMENTS WERE STOPPED. AND I WENT THROUGH HELL WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE TO GET MY MONTHLY CHECKS STARTED AGAIN. NOW MY MONTHLY CHECKS HAVE STOPPED AGAIN. CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME THAT THE SOCIAL SECURITY INFORMED THEM THAT I HAD DIED BUT CHECKS WOULD BE RESUMED. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS BS AFTER MY LAST EXPERIENCE WITH THEM. AT THAT TIME ONLY AFTER I MAILED A REGISTERED LETTER TO THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE THREATENING TO OBTAIN A ATTORNEY DID NY MONTHLY CHECKS BEGIN AGAIN.

Same here. I started with Met , now Brighthouse. Since 2016 . Major major payment screw up thats still not fully solved. Almost seems like a purposfull effort to lapse my paid up policy now im 66 . Maybee ill get frustrated and go away ? Is that your buisness model ? Sure feels like it to me . I should not have to fight and struggle and live in fear of my paid up policy. Ive spent a month on this now. I dont want my benificury to be wrongfully denied.

I am almost to my wits end. In October of 2021 I sent a check for $50 to be applied to a loan on a very old life insurance policy (Travelers to MetLife to Brighthouse). Two phone calls and two letters (one sent registered to the supervisor of the reconciliation unit) I just got the same response … send a copy of the front and back of the cancelled check.
I ‘sent’ a check but MetLife deducted the money ‘electronically’ from my checking account thence THERE IS NO CANCALLED CHECK. I included details from my local bank to confirm this.
I now have to make a copy of all this ridiculousness to send to their complaint department and as high up as I can go. I think I’ll include a copy for the Insurance Commissioner of Rhode Island.

I’m only beginning my journey with them. My brothers and I are beneficiaries and I wanted to confirm – after 2 months – that the company received our claim. I keep getting a recording that says they have a high call volume, then a recording says the office is closed (during their working hours), and a hang up. I sent an email and no one did the courtesy of a response. Not looking good.

Brighthouse is the absolute worse. I’ve been trying to get a death claim settles since 2025. Don’t even think that their customer service is going to help because they are horrible. First off you won’t get a representative in the US but someone overseas and they will not transfer to US representative until you have shared your confidential information. You never get the same representative so every time you call you have to start all over and resend the same documents. I have sent the same documents half a dozen times.
